A Strong Team to Grow Your Company

Team work makes the dream work, right? Well that's how the saying goes. However, it takes a lot more effort and intentionality to get to that point. But a strong team is essential to exceptional customer service and growing a business.

What makes a team successful?

  1. Capacity - technical capacity is when team members have the understanding of how to perform their role with some autonomy. If leadership is taking their time to micromanage doing the day-to-day tasks, this is robbing the agency of its technical capacity. Training is necessary, but there should be a training period with defined milestones until finally, the training period is over. If management is still having to handhold after the training period, then you are losing valuable capacity that could be serviced for client work.

How should companies do to reach maximum capacity.

a. Relay your expectations to your team

b. Give a time frame for training

c. Once the training period is over, let the team do their work. Sure, occasionally, leaders may need to come alongside for period of time, but it should not be a long term chore.

2. Future Focus- Embracing the leader's vision of the future for the organization. When the team has the same focus and goals, the company as a whole will grow stronger.

How can a team leader get the team aligned with the company's vision?

a. Share the company's vision at the time of onboarding process.

b. Be consistent and repeat the vision regularly.

c. Give feedback and updates on progress made to employees and other leaders.

3. Cultural Adherence - The concept of the team members being "all in". Asking for assistance or giving assistance to other coworkers. Have leaders leave room for that openness and asking questions. The concept of "the door is always open". It's the relationships within the company that are more than just work-based.

How do you encourage cultural adherence?

a. Have one-on-one conversations with team members

b. Have consistent and regular check-ins with your team

c. Have team activities or meetings that do not include work or projects. Try having fun and playing games.

4. Systems in place- When processes and policies are in place to guide a team and their work, employees have the opportunity to abandon their own past methods of working. If these processes are in place, then this gives more accurate work and helps keep rhythms in place for regular work.

When everyone works together, then you have a strong team. If everyone is fired up then they are excited about the work they do. It looks like leadership got lucky with these hires, but ultimately they see it takes teamwork to MAKE the dream work.
